Kwasu: update on school fees

*REPORT OF SU MEETING WITH THE MANAGEMENT OF KWASU ON THE PROPOSED PROGRAM NEEDS ADDED FEE*

5th September, 2020

Yesterday, The Students’ Union met with the committee of Deans to discuss the proposed program needs fee. The chairman of the committee, Prof. Hamzat discussed the purpose of proposing the new fee. He explained that it will be designated towards enhancing quality learning in various departments. He continued that the fee will be charged based on the research carried out on the needs of various departments. The fee, of which the highest is N50,000 and the lowest is N25,000 varies from department to department.

After listening to the analysis of the chairman of the committee, the Students’ Union President, Com. Kozeem Olaitan Hanafy expresses the dissatisfaction of the students and the unexpentancy of this proposed fee. He said that the students are expecting reduction in the school fee not that new fee will be proposed/introduced by the management. He instantly rejected the proposed new fee and ask that the committee should allow the students representatives to hold a meeting among themselves before anything can be said about the new fee.

After the meeting among the Students Representatives headed by the Students’ Union President, the Students’ Union demanded that the Vice Chancellor must be present before they can present their resolutions to the committee. this is because since the arrival of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mohammad Akanbi SAN, the Students' Union has been actively involved in the decision making of the university and a pointer to the fact that there is a strong working relationship between the management and the students. The SU believes that because of his leadership qualities and charisma, the university will be moved to a greater height. Hence his presence is needed in the meeting because the proposed fee caught the students off guard.

After the arrival of the Vice Chancellor, the Students’ Union President speak on behalf of the entire students that the resolution reached among the Students’ Representatives is that “Despite how good the plan is, the time is not right for the management to introduce new fee. Hence, The Students’ Union stand is that this new fee should not be introduced nor added to the payments for the 2020/2021 session. Therefore, the SU request for total cancellation of the fee”

The Vice Chancellor in his response explained why it’s necessary to introduce the new fee. He pleaded that the Students’ Representatives should understand why they’re introducing this fee. The VC hence proposed that instead of total cancellation of the proposed fee requested by the Students’ Union, they should do it in such a way that “New intakes will pay 75% of the proposed fee whilst Returning Students will pay 25% of the fee”

In response to this, one of the Students Union representatives insisted that if the fee is going to be introduced, there should be 50% reduction and it should not start from the 2020/2021 session because of the disastrous situation of the country’s economy which in turn has affected parents and guardians of the students. The SU President noted that the number of students that defer admission increases every year because average parents cannot afford to pay KWASU School Fees. Therefore, it will be disastrous to add or introduce new fee.

The meeting ended without both parties reaching conclusions. The Students’ Union however urge the students to kindly disregard any fake information that the school has added a new fee to the portal. There is nothing of such. The good interest of all students remain the utmost priority of the Students’ Union and this shall never be compromised. Students should be rest assured that the Students’ Union will always defend and fight for the interests of the students.

The meeting will continue in two weeks time as no decision has been reached yet.

Thank you

Signed

Kozeem Olaitan Hanafy,

President,

Students’ Union
