PDP's Support for Unregulated Street Trading Reflects Weak Opposition and Regressive Vision for Kwara

*PDP's Support for Unregulated Street Trading Reflects Weak Opposition and Regressive Vision for Kwara*

By :Hon AbdulRaman Babatunde Alabi Ajidagba

The recent statement by the PDP calling for the reinstatement of roadside trading, road blockage, and unsafe environmental practices in Kwara marks a deeply troubling development. It highlights their inability to offer a constructive or forward-thinking vision for the state's future. Instead of addressing the real challenges faced by the people of Kwara, the PDP’s position promotes disarray, disorder, and a complete disregard for the city’s evolving needs. Their support for unregulated street trading which leads to chaotic traffic, arbitrary parking, and harassment of innocent citizens  underscores their failure to provide a credible, meaningful platform for governance.

This proposal stands in stark contrast to the efforts made by the current government under leadership of Mallam Abdulrahman AbdulRazak to tackle urban issues such as traffic congestion, road safety, and environmental cleanliness. Under the leadership of the current administration, Kwara has made substantial strides toward improving these areas, with initiatives designed to regulate street trading, ensure orderly traffic flow, and promote a healthier living environment. These efforts have been widely praised by the people of Kwara, who are eager for continued progress and stability. However, the PDP’s stance threatens to undo all of this progress, essentially reversing years of hard-won improvements.

Rather than focusing on solutions that foster sustainable development, the PDP appears intent on perpetuating the very issues that have long plagued Kwara. Their support for a return to unregulated street trading directly contradicts the calls from residents and business owners for a more orderly and safer environment. The citizens of Kwara have expressed a strong desire for reforms that balance economic opportunity with public safety and urban planning. The PDP’s proposal disregards these concerns and risks returning the state to the days of disorder and inefficiency.

The upcoming 2027 elections will present a clear choice for Kwara voters: whether to continue with a government that is dedicated to building a modern, regulated, and thriving city, or to embrace the PDP’s outdated, regressive vision that seeks to return Kwara to the chaotic and unsafe environment of the past. The PDP has failed to offer any substantive or innovative solutions to the issues that matter most to Kwarans. Their reckless advocacy for unregulated street trading only reinforces the belief that they are out of touch with the aspirations of the people and unfit to lead the state.

In light of these facts, the voters of Kwara will undoubtedly recognize that the path to a prosperous, orderly, and safe future lies in the continued progress of the current administration, not in the return to disorder promoted by the PDP.
