The Kwara State Government on Saturday conducted its monthly environmental sanitation exercise across the state as part of ongoing efforts to promote a cleaner and healthier environment.
The exercise was coordinated through the Ministry of Environment under the leadership of the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Nafisat Buge.
Speaking with journalists, the Director of Environmental Services, Mrs. Mustapha Marry, said compliance with the sanitation order was generally high across the state. She disclosed that residents who violated the movement restriction order during the exercise were arrested and arraigned before a mobile court.
According to her, the court sentenced offenders to either pay a fine of ₦2,000 or serve a one-month prison term. While most of the offenders paid the stipulated fine, two residents, Yahyah Haruna and Semiu Hameed, opted to serve the jail term.
Mrs. Mustapha emphasized that the environmental sanitation exercise is not limited to Ilorin but is being implemented across all sixteen local government areas of the state.
She noted that the initiative, introduced by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, is aimed at ensuring cleaner communities, improving public health, and preventing the spread of diseases associated with poor sanitation.
The Director therefore urged residents of the state to continue supporting the Ministry of Environment by actively participating in the monthly sanitation exercise, stressing that collective responsibility remains essential to achieving a cleaner and healthier Kwara State.
