South Africa Arrests Over 200 in Major Illegal Mining Crackdown

Security Forces Target Illegal Mining Networks as Government Intensifies Fight Against Organized Crime

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — July 9, 2026

South African security forces have arrested more than 200 individuals, most of them undocumented foreign nationals, in a major operation targeting illegal mining activities at a gold mine shaft west of Johannesburg.

The raid, carried out on Tuesday, involved a joint team of police officers, military personnel, and private security operatives. The operation forms part of the government's broader effort to combat illegal mining and organized crime under Operation Prosper, a national security initiative launched earlier this year.

According to police authorities, a total of 217 suspects were arrested during the operation. More than 100 of those detained were reportedly undocumented migrants from Lesotho, while others were citizens of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Security operatives also recovered firearms and ammunition during the raid.

President Cyril Ramaphosa introduced Operation Prosper in February, describing organized crime as one of the most immediate threats to South Africa's security and economic stability. The initiative includes the deployment of approximately 2,200 soldiers to support law enforcement agencies in tackling criminal activities in high-risk communities across the country.

Illegal mining remains a persistent challenge in South Africa, with thousands of unregistered miners operating in abandoned mine shafts in search of gold and other valuable minerals. Many of these operations take place under dangerous conditions, exposing miners to significant health and safety risks.

Authorities say a large number of illegal miners originate from neighboring countries, driven by poverty, unemployment, and limited economic opportunities. Law enforcement agencies have also linked illegal mining operations to organized criminal networks involved in extortion, violent crimes, and other illicit activities.

The latest arrests come as South Africa adopts a tougher stance on undocumented migration and border security. In recent weeks, thousands of foreign nationals have reportedly left the country amid growing public pressure from groups that argue migrants are competing with local citizens for employment opportunities.

Government officials maintain that ongoing security operations are essential to restoring law and order, dismantling criminal syndicates, and protecting the country's natural resources from exploitation.
