ILORIN — Excitement is steadily building across Ilorin as the ancient city prepares for the September 16, 2026 turbaning of Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq CON, as the Sardauna of Ilorin Emirate.

The prestigious title was recently bestowed on the Governor by the Emir of Ilorin, Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, in recognition of his contributions to the peace, progress and development of Ilorin Emirate and Kwara State at large.

The Sardauna title carries a deep historical significance, traditionally reflecting courage, leadership, defence and service to the community. Governor AbdulRazaq is set to become the second holder of the title, following the late businessman and philanthropist, Alhaji Umar Saro.

The honour has generated considerable interest among residents and stakeholders, particularly against the backdrop of the physical transformation witnessed across Ilorin in recent years.

From major road projects and urban renewal to expanding commercial activities and new architectural developments, the Kwara capital has continued to experience significant changes under the AbdulRazaq administration. The Central Business District, particularly the Ahmadu Bello Way corridor, has become a striking example of the city's changing skyline.

With the ceremonial date fast approaching, Ilorin is gradually assuming a festive character. Traditional institutions, residents, political associates, community leaders and visitors are looking forward to what promises to be one of the city's major ceremonial gatherings of the year.

The occasion is also expected to draw a high-powered gathering of political and public figures. Vice President Kashim Shettima is expected to lead other dignitaries, including governors and prominent leaders from across the country, to Ilorin for the historic ceremony.

Beyond the conferment of a traditional title, the event is expected to showcase the cultural heritage and enduring traditions of the Ilorin Emirate while bringing together people from different walks of life in celebration of the Governor's new traditional responsibility.

All eyes are therefore set on September 16, as Ilorin prepares to witness the formal installation of AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as the Sardauna of Ilorin Emirate.
