NAPS ON NIGERIA INDEPENDENCE;A CALL FOR SOBER MELANCHOLY

Nigeria @ 60, A Call For Sober Melancholy.

1st October, 2020.

The leadership of National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) felicitate with Nigerians and President Muhammadu Buhari today 1st October, 2020, being the 60th anniversary of our independence as a Nation, may the labor of our heroes past never be in vain.

Virtually we all can vividly recall the story of our long walk to freedom, though a good number of us were not born then but we are products of history , all thanks to God almighty and tribute to the fallen and living heroes who have laboured hard and selflessly for the emancipation of Nigeria as an independent Nation, we deeply appreciate the freedom we are enjoying today.

Nigeria is a blessed Nation with alot of Natural deposits and Social amenities, the country kick-started on the basis of Peace, Love and Unity not minding differences in ethnics, tribes or regions, religions, etc. Our founding fathers laid all manner of differences aside in other to achieve Freedom from our colonial masters and of course bow out of the slave trade era.

However, it is joyful to know that we still exist as a Nation despite the turbulent, titanic and trying times we experienced together as a country, we have indeed crossed different oceans and we are still crossing till we finally arrive our promised land (THE NIGERIA OF OUR DREAM).

The leadership of NAPS uses this medium to call on President Muhammadu Buhari, the Governors, National Assembly members, Elder Statesmen, Nigeria Students and Youths, Critical Stakeholders, etc, to shun all manner of divisive factors and guide/defend jealously the hard labor of forefathers. Nigerians living both at home and in diaspora must rise up in one voice to shun Regionalism, Tribalism, Religious Bigotry, Nepotism, Racism, Bad Governance and other allied menace capable of tearing us apart.

We urge President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR to ensure the complete involvement of all regions in governance, no tribe, region or set of people should be treated as slaves, until then, the fight against crime, insecurity, insurgence, banditry and terrorism as a whole is a mere joke.

We must not shy away from the fact that the country is at the edge of collapsing going by the agitations of some regions trying to break out and become independent, firstly it was  the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) comprising of the South-East/

South-South region and now the Southwest region is also agitating for Oduduwa Republic, in our most recent interview with some of our Elder Statesmen from the aforementioned regions, the factor they kept nailing was Marginalisation, Mr President please take note.

We are basking in the euphoria of the past generation, we haven't made any reasonable landmark achievement in this generation other than Democracy, the said democracy which is seriously under threat today, we have mortgaged over 70% of the gifts / inheritance we got from the past generation (Our Forefathers) and we haven't been able to replace it with any.

No more Free Education,

No more Free Meals,

No more Free Health Care,

No more Security,

No more stable Power Supply,

No more Free Jobs, etc.

The only success recorded by our generation so far is Democracy and yet our Political Juggernauts have raped this democracy repeatedly, people can no longer freely exercise their franchise, you are not guaranteed freedom after speech, you are not guaranteed freedom in any region different from yours, you are not guaranteed freedom /security both on Government roads and even your personal house, no freedom of expression, no freedom of worship, Terrorists everywhere, Banditry and insurgence now appears to be the most lucrative business in Nigeria @ 60,  What heritage are we leaving behind for the generation unborn just like we inherited alot from the past generation? Hope the next generation won't refer to us as failures? How do we live to tell our Children the story of how one time Giant of Africa (Nigeria) crumbled and failed? A call for sober Melancholy.

We have allowed politics override our sense of humor, we have allowed our individual selfish aggrandizement to soil the Peace, Unity and Progress of Nigeria, we have caused Suffering, Pains and Affliction on over 200 million Nigerians simply because of our Greed and Selfishness, we have rendered so many Nigerians homeless simply because we want our children to inherit mansions, we have rendered some children illiterates just because we want our children to study in Harvard University and other institutions abroad, we have killed other people's children so that our children can come from abroad and take over the leadership of Nigeria? We have stylishly brought back the slave trade era but in a modernized way, Nigeria @ 60.

However, it is better late than never.

The leadership of National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) wishes to reach out to all and sundry to see the betterment of Nigeria as a collective struggle, yes we have tried repeatedly and failed ,it doesn't matter,  so long as we haven't stopped trying then we shall arrive one day....... Thomas Edison tried 99 times before we could enjoy lightening in our homes today.

We want World Class Education (even if it won't be free).

We want Security.

We want stable Power Supply.

We want a Peaceful and United Nigeria........Great People, Great Nation.

The Unity of Nigeria is Non-Negotiable!

Emphatic NO TO MARGINALISATION.

United We Stand, Divided We Fall.

Signed,

Activist Sunday A. Asuku GCNPS,
