David Mark-Led ADC Faction Protests at Abuja Court, Urges Judiciary Not to Stifle Opposition Parties

By AbdulGafar Saka O

ABUJA — Members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the David Mark-led faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday staged a peaceful protest at the Federal High Court in Abuja, calling on the judiciary to protect Nigeria's democratic space and refrain from actions that could weaken opposition parties.

The protesters, comprising party officials, supporters, and political stakeholders, gathered at the court premises carrying placards with various inscriptions advocating justice, political fairness, and the preservation of multiparty democracy.

Addressing journalists during the protest, leaders of the faction expressed concerns over ongoing legal disputes affecting the party, warning that judicial decisions perceived as politically motivated could undermine public confidence in democratic institutions.

The group maintained that opposition parties remain a critical component of any democratic system, providing alternative voices, promoting accountability, and ensuring effective checks and balances in governance.

According to the protesters, the judiciary has a constitutional responsibility to remain independent and impartial in the discharge of its duties. They urged judges handling political cases to be guided strictly by the rule of law and the principles of justice, equity, and fairness.

The demonstrators also called on political actors to respect democratic norms and avoid actions capable of suppressing legitimate opposition activities, stressing that political competition should be conducted within the bounds of the law.
