WAEC Blames Exam Delays on Fatal Accident, Security and Logistical Challenges

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has attributed delays in the conduct of some papers in the ongoing 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of three of its officials, as well as security and logistical challenges.
WAEC disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday by its Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, following widespread complaints from candidates, parents, and school authorities over the late commencement of some examination papers in several centres across the country.
According to the council, the three officials lost their lives on Wednesday in a road accident along the Gombe–Yola highway while transporting sensitive examination materials across states. The incident reportedly disrupted the distribution schedule and significantly contributed to delays experienced at affected examination centres.
WAEC expressed deep sorrow over the loss of its personnel, describing the deceased officials as dedicated staff members who died in the line of duty while ensuring the successful conduct of the examination.
The council also cited security concerns in some parts of the country and other logistical constraints as factors affecting the timely delivery of examination materials. It explained that extraordinary measures were taken to safeguard the integrity and security of the examination process despite the challenges encountered.
While apologising to candidates and stakeholders for the inconveniences caused, WAEC reassured the public of its commitment to maintaining the credibility of its examinations and ensuring that all candidates are given a fair opportunity to complete their papers.
The examination body further appealed for understanding and cooperation from the public as it continues to address operational challenges and strengthen measures to prevent similar disruptions in future examinations.
The ongoing WASSCE has witnessed complaints from some centres regarding delays in the distribution of question papers, prompting concerns among candidates and parents. However, WAEC maintained that efforts are being intensified to ensure the smooth conduct of the remaining papers.
