Nigeria Records Over 102,000 New HIV Infections in 2025, Lagos Tops List

Nigeria Records Over 102,000 New HIV Infections in 2025, Lagos Tops List.

Nigeria recorded a total of 102,025 new HIV infections across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in 2025, according to the State of the Health of the Nation Report 2025 released by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

The report revealed that Lagos State recorded the highest number of new HIV infections during the year, accounting for 10,430 cases, underscoring the continued public health challenge posed by the virus despite ongoing prevention and treatment interventions.

Rivers State ranked second with 6,287 new infections, followed closely by Kano State with 6,106 cases.

Other states with high numbers of new HIV infections include Akwa Ibom with 5,413 cases, Taraba with 4,854, Benue with 4,804, and Anambra with 4,468 cases.

The report further showed that Kaduna State recorded 3,659 new infections, while Adamawa State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) reported 2,989 and 2,764 cases respectively, completing the list of the ten states with the highest burden of new HIV infections in 2025.

Health experts say the figures highlight the need for sustained efforts to curb the spread of HIV, particularly among vulnerable populations and in high-burden states.

Despite the concerning statistics, Nigeria continues to operate one of the largest HIV treatment programmes globally, with millions of people living with the virus accessing life-saving antiretroviral therapy through government health facilities and donor-supported initiatives.

In recent years, the Federal Government, through the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) and other health agencies, has intensified measures aimed at reducing new infections. These efforts include the expansion of free HIV testing services, increased access to antiretroviral drugs, strengthening of Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) programmes, promotion of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for high-risk groups, community sensitisation campaigns, and enhanced disease surveillance systems.

Public health stakeholders have stressed the importance of increased awareness, early testing, and access to treatment as critical strategies in achieving the national goal of ending HIV/AIDS as a public health threat.
