AMS Advocates Religious Harmony, Unity at 9th Offa Anglican Synod

The National Coordinator of the Kwankwaso National Network (KNN) and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Offa/Oyun/Ifelodun Federal Constituency, Asiwaju Mashood Shittu (AMS), has reaffirmed his commitment to promoting religious harmony, peaceful coexistence, and community development across Nigeria.

Asiwaju also urged Nigerians to embrace unity irrespective of ethnic, cultural, or religious differences.

He made the call while delivering his address as the Special Guest of Honour at the 3rd Session of the 9th Synod of the Diocese of Offa, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at the Cathedral Church of Saint Mark, Offa, Kwara State.

The synod, themed “The Hypocrisy of Self-Righteousness: A Call to Humility and Love,” brought together clergy, lay faithful, and distinguished guests to deliberate on issues affecting the Church and society. The event also featured the launch of the Diocese’s ₦100 million Endowment Fund.

Addressing participants, Shittu described Nigeria’s diversity as a divine blessing that should unite rather than divide the nation. He noted that the country’s ethnic and religious differences reflect God’s wisdom and should never be used as a basis for conflict.

According to him, citizens should remain grateful to God while continuing to promote peace, tolerance, and mutual respect within their communities.

The politician cited Offa as one of Nigeria’s finest examples of peaceful coexistence, noting that the town has maintained a rich tradition of religious tolerance despite attempts by some individuals to create division for political gains.

He stated that successive generations of Offa indigenes have preserved the values handed down by their forefathers by living together in harmony, regardless of religious affiliation.

Recalling his childhood experiences, Shittu said Christians and Muslims in the community freely celebrated Christmas and Eid festivities together, describing such memories as evidence of the enduring bond that continues to define the town.

He commended both Christian and Muslim leaders for consistently preaching peace, fairness, and godliness, adding that their contributions have played a vital role in sustaining unity within the community.

Asiwaju prayed for God to grant the religious leaders good health, strength, and wisdom to continue providing moral and spiritual guidance to society.

He further called on political leaders to complement the efforts of religious institutions by promoting good governance, justice, and national unity, stressing that sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace.

“A peaceful society is the foundation for economic growth and community development. Traders, artisans, professionals, and every citizen can only thrive where there is peace,” he said.

Shittu assured the gathering that he would continue to champion unity as a core principle of his public service and political engagement. He also pledged financial support towards the development initiatives of the Diocese.

His remarks were warmly received by members of the clergy, delegates, and other dignitaries who attended the synod.
