A British citizen of Zimbabwean heritage has been charged with three counts of murder after being arrested in South Africa in connection with the deaths of his wife and two daughters in Bedfordshire, United Kingdom.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed that it had authorised charges against Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma shortly after his arrest in Johannesburg on Friday.

The victims were identified as Nothabo Zandile Tshuma, 42, and her daughters, Natalie, 15, and Nala, five. Their bodies were discovered at their residence in Great Denham, near Bedford, after police forced entry following concerns that the family had not been seen for several days.

Chief Crown Prosecutor Emma Davies said the decision to charge Tshuma followed a detailed review of evidence submitted by Bedfordshire Police.

“The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised three charges of murder against Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma following the deaths of his wife and two daughters,” Davies said.

“This comes after the careful review of evidence provided by Bedfordshire Police.”

According to South African authorities, Tshuma was arrested in the Kensington area of Johannesburg during a coordinated operation involving multiple specialist law enforcement units.

In a statement released on Friday, the South African Police Service said the arrest demonstrated the country's commitment to international law enforcement cooperation and reinforced the message that South Africa would not serve as a refuge for fugitives seeking to evade justice.

Meanwhile, Bedfordshire Police confirmed that extradition arrangements are already underway to facilitate Tshuma's return to the United Kingdom to face prosecution.

Detective Inspector Lee Martin described the case as a rapidly evolving international investigation involving Bedfordshire Police, the National Crime Agency, Interpol, and law enforcement authorities in both South Africa and Zimbabwe.

“Our investigation remains ongoing and we'll be working closely with our counterparts in South Africa, as well as the National Crime Agency and the Crown Prosecution Service, to bring him back to this country,” Martin said.

The deaths of Zandile, Natalie, and Nala were publicly announced on Tuesday, a day after their bodies were discovered at the family's home on Carnoustie Drive in Great Denham.

In a statement issued through the police, members of the family expressed gratitude to the public for the support they have received during what they described as “a time of unimaginable loss.”

Authorities in both the United Kingdom and South Africa have pledged continued cooperation as legal proceedings and extradition efforts move forward.
