Guinea-Bissau Military Court Returns Main Opposition Leader to Prison

Domingos Simoes Pereira Placed in Pre-Trial Detention Amid Coup and Financial Crime Allegations

A military court in Guinea-Bissau has ordered the return of the country's main opposition leader, Domingos Simoes Pereira, to prison pending trial, according to local media reports.

Pereira was reportedly placed in pre-trial detention on Friday over allegations linking him to an attempted coup in October 2025, which authorities claim he helped finance. He also faces separate charges related to financial crimes and alleged involvement in a 2023 coup plot.

Witnesses said Pereira arrived at the military court in the capital, Bissau, on Friday morning before being escorted under heavy security to the Segunda Esquadra Prison following the court's decision.

Domingos Simões Pereira was among several senior political figures detained after the military seized power in November 2025.

The military takeover resulted in the removal of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló just days after presidential and legislative elections. At the time, military leaders claimed their intervention was necessary to prevent violence between supporters of rival political camps and announced a one-year transitional administration.

Pereira, who leads the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde, was barred from contesting political office following the military takeover. After spending several weeks in detention, he was released from prison in January and remained under house arrest in Bissau until his latest court appearance.

His legal team and party officials have strongly rejected the allegations against him, describing the charges as politically motivated. They argue that the case is part of an effort to prevent him from participating in the presidential election scheduled for December 6.

Guinea-Bissau has long struggled with political instability since gaining independence in 1974. The West African nation has experienced five successful coups and several attempted overthrows, contributing to recurring governance challenges and economic difficulties.

Analysts say persistent political unrest, widespread poverty, and weak institutions have also made the country vulnerable to corruption and transnational drug trafficking networks.

The latest developments are expected to heighten political tensions ahead of the planned presidential election, as opposition groups continue to call for greater political freedoms and respect for democratic processes.
