Rights Group Urges International Community to Condemn Repression and Defend Rule of Law

TUNIS, TUNISIA — July 10, 2026

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has condemned what it describes as an escalating crackdown by Tunisian authorities on political opponents, human rights defenders, and civil society actors, raising concerns over the country's worsening human rights situation.

The international rights organization joined United Nations experts and other civil society groups in expressing deep concern about what it termed an intensifying human rights crisis in Tunisia.

According to HRW, the situation has deteriorated significantly in the five years since Tunisian President Kais Saied assumed extraordinary executive powers. The organization argues that the country has witnessed a resurgence of authoritarian practices, resulting in increased restrictions on fundamental freedoms and democratic institutions.

HRW stated that the crackdown has led to what it described as systematic repression targeting civil society organizations, journalists, political opponents, independent lawyers, and migrants, alongside a broader erosion of the rule of law.

The organization further reported that Tunisian courts have recently handed prison sentences and substantial fines to eight human rights defenders over charges linked to their advocacy and professional activities.

Addressing the 62nd Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, HRW called on the council and its member states to publicly condemn the alleged repression and take a stronger stance in defense of human rights and democratic principles in Tunisia.

According to the group, continued silence from the international community risks emboldening Tunisian authorities and could be interpreted as tacit approval of ongoing actions against activists and opposition figures.

The latest concerns add to growing international scrutiny of Tunisia's political and human rights environment, as rights organizations continue to monitor developments and advocate for greater protections for civil liberties and democratic governance in the North African nation.
