NAFDAC: Nigerians Warn Against Banned Alcoholic Energy Drinks

Agency Alerts Importers, Distributors and Consumers Following Product Seizure in Ghana

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against importing, distributing, selling, or consuming two banned alcoholic energy drinks recently confiscated by authorities in Ghana.

The warning was contained in Public Alert No. 032/2026, issued by NAFDAC and published on its official communication platforms on Friday.

According to the agency, it received a notification from Ghana's food and drug regulatory authorities regarding the seizure of approximately 140 boxes of the affected products during an enforcement operation in the Upper East Region of Ghana.

The products identified are Bel Ice Vodka Energy Drink and Cody's Vody Energy Mix.

NAFDAC stated that the products had previously been prohibited from sale and distribution due to concerns over their safety and the potential health risks associated with combining alcohol and stimulant substances commonly found in energy drinks.

The agency explained that stimulant ingredients in such beverages can mask the effects of alcohol intoxication, causing consumers to underestimate their level of impairment and potentially engage in risky behavior.

According to NAFDAC, the consumption of alcoholic energy drinks may lead to excessive alcohol intake, impaired judgment and coordination, cardiovascular complications, dehydration, sleep disturbances, and an increased risk of alcohol-related injuries and accidents.

The agency noted that adolescents and young adults are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects associated with these products.

NAFDAC therefore advised importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers to ensure that the affected products are not imported into Nigeria or made available for sale within the country's markets.

The agency also urged beverage dealers and retailers to verify that all products offered for sale comply with NAFDAC's registration and regulatory requirements.

Furthermore, members of the public were encouraged to report any suspected presence of the products in the Nigerian supply chain to the nearest NAFDAC office.

NAFDAC added that consumers can also report sightings of the products or any adverse reactions linked to their consumption through the agency's official reporting channels and electronic reporting platforms.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that only safe, approved, and regulated products are available to consumers across Nigeria.
