NANS Kwara Engages UNILORIN Management Over Private Hostel Fee Review

Student Body Commends University's Transparency, Clarifies Accommodation Charges

ILORIN, KWARA STATE — July 17, 2026

By Poet of Afrique Reporter

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Kwara State Axis, has engaged the management of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) over concerns arising from reports of an increase in accommodation fees charged by privately owned hostels within the institution.

The fact-finding visit, led by the Chairman of NANS Kwara State Axis, Comrade Yusuf Abdulquadir Eleburuike, was aimed at obtaining firsthand information from the university management following widespread reactions to a viral social media report on the matter.

The NANS delegation was received on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, by the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Alex Morenikeji Akanmu.

During the meeting, the dean commended NANS for seeking clarification through official channels rather than relying on speculation and unverified reports. He reiterated the university's commitment to maintaining an open-door policy on issues affecting students' welfare.

Presenting students' concerns, Eleburuike requested clarification on the previous accommodation fees, the reasons for the review, and the role of the university in regulating privately owned hostels operating within its premises.

Responding, Dr. Akanmu explained that the hostels in question are privately owned facilities located on the university campus but regulated by the institution to ensure compliance with established standards and the protection of students' interests.

He disclosed that accommodation fee reviews are conducted periodically, typically after every three academic sessions. According to him, the previous approved accommodation rates were ₦196,000 for two-person rooms, ₦180,000 for three-person rooms, and ₦157,000 for four-person rooms.

The dean revealed that hostel operators had initially proposed an increase of nearly 100 percent, but the proposal was rejected by the university management. He stated that extensive negotiations were held to arrive at a more moderate adjustment that would reflect prevailing economic realities while protecting students from excessive financial burdens.

Following discussions, the university approved a 30 percent increase, resulting in revised accommodation rates of ₦255,000 for two-person rooms, ₦234,000 for three-person rooms, and ₦204,000 for four-person rooms.

According to the university, hostel operators were also directed to upgrade facilities through renovations and provide alternative power solutions, including solar energy systems, to improve living conditions for students.

Dr. Akanmu further clarified that certain charges associated with hostel allocation should not be mistaken for accommodation fees. He explained that caution fees remain refundable where no damages are recorded, while utility charges are meant to cover essential services provided within the facilities.

At the end of the engagement, NANS Kwara expressed satisfaction with the explanations provided by the university management and commended the Vice-Chancellor, the Dean of Student Affairs, and other officials for prioritising students' welfare during negotiations with hostel operators.

The student body also praised the hostel operators for embracing dialogue and reaching a compromise that balanced operational realities with the interests of students.

NANS encouraged private investors to partner with the university in expanding hostel infrastructure, noting that increased investment would improve accommodation availability, encourage healthy competition, and provide students with more affordable housing options.

The association further urged bloggers, media organisations, and public commentators to verify information through appropriate channels before publication, while acknowledging that public discussions surrounding the issue had ultimately encouraged greater transparency and stakeholder engagement.

NANS Kwara reaffirmed its commitment to protecting students' interests through constructive dialogue, strategic engagement, and evidence-based advocacy aimed at improving the welfare and academic success of students across the state.
