The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Kano Region, has received two new 100MVA power transformers for installation at the ongoing 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation in Katsina State.
According to the company, the transformers were delivered on July 9, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to expand and strengthen Nigeria’s national transmission network.
The development aligns with TCN’s strategic grid expansion programme aimed at enhancing bulk power transmission, improving electricity supply, and supporting economic growth across Katsina State and the wider North-West region.
The transformers are key components required for the completion of the transmission substation project. Upon installation, testing, and commissioning, the facility is expected to increase transmission capacity in the region by an additional 160 megawatts (MW).
TCN noted that the completion and energisation of the substation will improve the reliability, flexibility, and operational efficiency of electricity transmission while enhancing the company's ability to deliver bulk power to Distribution Companies (DisCos) serving Katsina State and neighbouring communities.
The project is expected to reduce network constraints and support the growing demand for electricity by residential, commercial, and industrial consumers within the region.
The Katsina Transmission Substation forms part of a broader nationwide infrastructure development programme being implemented by TCN to modernise and reinforce the national grid.
The company stated that the initiative is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s power transmission capacity, improve grid stability, and facilitate the evacuation of additional electricity generated across the country.
Industry stakeholders have described the project as a significant step toward improving power infrastructure and ensuring a more reliable electricity supply for consumers in Katsina State and the North-West geopolitical zone.
The transmission expansion programme remains a critical component of ongoing efforts to enhance energy access and support socio-economic development across Nigeria.
