UNILAG Advises Female Students Against Risky Situations in Anti-Rape Safety Campaign
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has issued a series of safety advisories to female students as part of efforts to prevent sexual harassment and rape on campus.
The guidance, displayed on a roll-up banner by the institution's Student Affairs Division, outlines precautionary measures aimed at promoting personal safety in response to concerns over incidents of sexual assault within the university community.
Among the recommendations are warnings to avoid secluded places with men, reject unnecessary favours, refrain from accepting intoxicants, remain vigilant when served drinks, and be assertive in refusing unwanted advances.
The advisory also encourages students to avoid watching pornographic materials, exercise caution in their interactions, and "learn to say no," while stressing the importance of making informed decisions about sexual relationships.
According to the Student Affairs Division, the campaign is part of the university's counselling and awareness initiatives designed to educate students on strategies for reducing the risk of sexual harassment and rape.
The renewed awareness drive comes amid previous reports of sexual assault cases involving members of the university community.
In one ongoing case, a female student testified before a Lagos court that she was allegedly raped by a lecturer in an underground office on the university campus in August 2025. The student, who gave evidence through the prosecution, told the court that the lecturer had instructed her to see him after an examination before the alleged incident occurred.
UNILAG has also witnessed other high-profile sexual assault cases in recent years, including the 2019 prosecution of five students accused of the gang rape of a 17-year-old student.
The university's latest advisory forms part of broader efforts to strengthen awareness, encourage vigilance, and promote a safer learning environment for students.
