JAMB Terminates Admission Into Affiliated Degree Programmes in Colleges of Education
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced the discontinuation of admissions into university-affiliated degree programmes run by Colleges of Education nationwide, beginning with the 2026/2027 academic session.
Under the new directive, candidates who previously applied for affiliated degree programmes will be reassigned to their selected Colleges of Education or relevant Agric-related Non-Technology National Diploma (ND) programmes.
As part of the updated admission process, JAMB has also introduced compulsory O'Level result verification for all prospective NCE candidates. The verification fee has been fixed at ₦1,500 for candidates with one sitting and ₦2,000 for those presenting results from two sittings.
The Board instructed its registration centres and officials to familiarize themselves with the revised guidelines and ensure full implementation across all admission processes.
For years, affiliated degree programmes provided an avenue for Colleges of Education to collaborate with universities in awarding bachelor's degrees. The arrangement enabled students to study within Colleges of Education while earning degrees certified by partnering universities.
With the latest policy, that pathway will no longer be available to new applicants, signaling a major restructuring of teacher education admissions in the country.
Education experts believe the decision is designed to reposition the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) as the primary qualification for teacher training and to strengthen the mandate of Colleges of Education as specialised institutions for producing professional educators.
The policy is expected to reshape admission patterns into Colleges of Education and may influence future reforms within Nigeria's tertiary education sector.
