Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has declared an end to absenteeism in local government administration, warning newly inaugurated chairmen of the state's 21 local government councils to remain at their duty posts and maintain close contact with the people they were elected to serve.
The governor issued the directive on Wednesday during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected council chairmen held at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Yola.
Fintiri emphasized that grassroots leadership is a full-time responsibility that requires commitment, accountability, and consistent engagement with residents.
He stressed that local government offices must remain operational, accessible, and responsive to the needs of the people, noting that effective governance at the grassroots level is essential to the overall success of government policies and programmes.
According to the governor, the newly elected chairmen must demonstrate dedication, humility, and integrity while ensuring that the benefits of governance are felt across their respective communities.
He reminded the council leaders that the oath of office they took represents a solemn commitment to uphold the Constitution, protect public resources, and discharge their responsibilities with transparency, fairness, and accountability.
Fintiri also urged the chairmen to work closely with traditional rulers, Development Area Administrators, and other stakeholders to promote peace, security, and sustainable development across the state.
He noted that collaboration among key institutions remains vital to strengthening local governance and ensuring inclusive development in all communities.
The governor congratulated the 21 council chairmen and 226 councillors elected during the recent local government elections, urging them to justify the confidence reposed in them by the electorate through quality leadership and selfless service.
He further commended the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission for conducting what he described as a peaceful, free, fair, and credible election.
Fintiri noted that his administration has successfully conducted four local government elections within seven years, describing the achievement as a significant contribution to democratic consolidation and grassroots governance in Adamawa State.
Speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated chairmen, Ibrahim Jimeta expressed appreciation to the governor for creating an enabling environment for a peaceful and credible electoral process.
Jimeta assured residents that the chairmen would run transparent, accountable, and inclusive administrations, while remaining committed to fulfilling campaign promises and delivering democratic dividends to the grassroots.
The oath of office and allegiance was administered by the Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, who formally inaugurated the newly elected council chairmen.
The ceremony attracted senior government officials, members of the State Executive Council, lawmakers, traditional rulers, political leaders, party supporters, and other dignitaries from across Adamawa State, marking the commencement of a new phase in local government administration under the Fintiri administration.
