Eleven persons abducted by suspected kidnappers in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State have regained their freedom after reportedly escaping from captivity when their captors fell asleep in the forest.
One of the victims, Braimah Destiny, who spoke on behalf of the group at the Edo State Police Command Headquarters in Benin City, narrated that he was returning from his farm when he encountered six armed men wielding guns and machetes.
According to him, the kidnappers abducted him alongside 10 other victims and marched them deep into the forest.
“I was coming from the farm when I met six armed men. They also captured other people, making us 11 victims in total. They moved us from one bush to another throughout the night. We heard gunshots from security operatives while they were taking us away,” he said.
Braimah explained that after trekking for several hours, the kidnappers became exhausted and instructed the victims to remain hidden in a secluded area.
“They were very tired and eventually slept off. That gave us the opportunity to escape and find our way to the police. During our captivity, we were beaten and subjected to various forms of maltreatment,” he added.
Another victim, Gloria Inyanugbo, recounted her ordeal after being kidnapped while working on her farm. She revealed that she spent four days in captivity before her family secured her release.
According to her, the kidnappers demanded and received a ransom of ₦3 million, in addition to ₦300,000 allegedly meant for food, hard drugs, and other supplies.
She commended the efforts of community vigilantes and security operatives, noting that some of the suspects were later apprehended through coordinated operations.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Police Command disclosed that it arrested 32 suspected kidnappers and rescued 38 kidnapped victims across the state in June through intelligence-led operations and tactical interventions.
The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, who revealed the figures during a press briefing in Benin City, said the command also arrested 15 suspected cultists, three armed robbery suspects, 11 murder suspects, and 14 individuals linked to rape and defilement cases within the same period.
Agbonika attributed the successes to improved intelligence gathering, inter-agency collaboration, and support from residents of the state.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating violent crimes and ensuring that criminal elements have no safe haven in Edo State.
“The achievements recorded reflect the dedication, professionalism, and resilience of our officers and the invaluable support of law-abiding citizens. These successes motivate us to intensify efforts toward making Edo one of the safest states in the country,” the police commissioner stated.
He also urged members of the public to continue providing timely information to security agencies, stressing that community cooperation remains vital in the fight against crime.
