Okonkwo Backs Amaechi’s Emergence as ADC Running Mate, Clarifies Position on South-East Representation

The spokesperson for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Kenneth Okonkwo, has dismissed reports suggesting that he opposed the emergence of former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the party’s vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Okonkwo stated that he fully supports the party’s decision, stressing that Amaechi’s nomination reflects the collective choice of the party and its leadership.

According to him, his earlier comments advocating a vice-presidential candidate from the South-East were based on considerations of geopolitical balance rather than opposition to any individual.

He explained that the provisions of the Electoral Act influenced the pool of eligible candidates available for consideration, noting that some preferred South-East contenders were not qualified under the law.

“I maintained that the vice-presidential position should ideally come from the South-East. However, that was a geopolitical position and not directed against any individual. The reality is that the Electoral Act places certain restrictions on eligibility, which limited the available options,” he said.

Okonkwo noted that key figures who had shown interest in the party’s presidential ticket included Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, Hayatu-deen, and Peter Obi before political realignments reshaped the contest.

He argued that Amaechi’s strong showing during the party’s primary election made him a significant stakeholder whose supporters deserved recognition within the party structure.

According to him, the former Rivers State governor secured substantial support during the primary process, making his selection a strategic move aimed at strengthening party unity ahead of the general election.

Okonkwo, however, emphasized that broader consultations with stakeholders from the South-East would have further enhanced inclusiveness in the decision-making process.

He also commended Atiku Abubakar’s approach to party leadership, describing him as a democrat who prioritized dialogue and consultation upon his return to the country after the announcement of the vice-presidential candidate.

In a related remark, Okonkwo alleged that his former principal and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, disappointed him politically, while noting that Atiku continued to appreciate his contributions despite previous criticisms.

The development comes as political parties continue to consolidate their structures and prepare for the 2027 general elections.
