The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has charged newly inducted nurses to remain committed to quality healthcare delivery, compassion, and the welfare of patients as they begin their professional careers.

The Registrar of the Council, Ndagi Alhassan, gave the charge during the induction ceremony of 92 nursing graduates of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD).

Represented by Aliu Adamu, the Registrar described the occasion as a significant milestone in the lives of the graduates and urged them to uphold the ethical standards of the nursing profession.

He emphasized the importance of dedication, compassion, and professionalism in providing quality healthcare services, noting that nurses play a critical role in promoting the well-being of individuals and communities.

Alhassan also commended the founder of ABUAD, Aare Afe Babalola (SAN), for his contributions to educational development and healthcare training, while congratulating parents and guardians for their support throughout the academic journey of the inductees.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor of ABUAD, Prof. Smaranda Olarinde, encouraged the new nurses to pursue excellence, develop professional competence, and remain relevant in a rapidly evolving healthcare sector.

She noted that nurses have become increasingly indispensable in addressing contemporary health challenges, including emerging diseases, climate-related health risks, and global pandemics.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the university recently approved an Artificial Intelligence policy aimed at promoting the ethical use of AI in learning, research, and innovation, positioning the institution among the leading universities embracing technological advancement in Nigeria.

Delivering a lecture titled “Nursing Beyond the Bedside: Leading Practice, Education and Research in the AI Era,” Professor of Medical-Surgical Nursing at the University of Ibadan, Prof. Beatrice Ohaeri, highlighted the growing impact of artificial intelligence on healthcare delivery.

She, however, stressed that while AI can enhance efficiency and improve healthcare outcomes, it cannot replace the empathy, compassion, and human connection that remain central to the nursing profession.

Ohaeri urged the newly inducted nurses to embrace technological innovations while preserving the profession’s core values of care, compassion, and patient-centered service.

The ceremony marked the formal admission of the graduates into the nursing profession, paving the way for them to contribute to healthcare delivery and national development.
