The Federal Government has successfully evacuated another batch of Nigerians from South Africa following renewed anti-migrant violence and xenophobic attacks in parts of the country.
A total of 268 Nigerian returnees arrived safely at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, aboard an Air Peace charter flight as part of the government's ongoing efforts to assist citizens affected by the unrest.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, disclosed that the flight transported the returnees alongside two officials and crew members from Johannesburg to Lagos.
According to the minister, the evacuation flight departed Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg in the early hours of Friday and was fully funded by the Federal Government.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu explained that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had directed that the evacuation exercise should continue beyond the June 30, 2026 deadline earlier announced by anti-migrant groups in South Africa, in order to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerian citizens who wish to return home.
She noted that previous evacuation operations had already facilitated the return of nearly 600 Nigerians before the expiration of the deadline, adding that arrangements remain in place for other registered citizens who have completed the required screening process.
The minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad and providing assistance to those affected by the ongoing tensions.
Reports indicate that the recent wave of xenophobic violence has resulted in casualties and displacement, prompting several African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Mozambique, to organize voluntary repatriation programmes for their nationals.
The Federal Government assured that efforts to evacuate willing Nigerians would continue until all eligible citizens seeking to return home have been safely repatriated.
