West Africa Reels From Deadly Floods as Death Toll Rises

By Poet of Afrique News

Several West African countries are battling devastating floods following days of torrential rainfall that have claimed dozens of lives, displaced residents and caused widespread destruction of homes, roads and businesses.

The affected countries include Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Benin, Togo and Nigeria, where authorities continue emergency response efforts amid fears of further rainfall.

In Ghana, at least 13 people have been confirmed dead after heavy downpours submerged large sections of the capital, Accra. Rescue teams and residents worked tirelessly to save stranded victims as floodwaters swept through major roads and residential communities.

According to meteorological reports, Ghana recorded more than 140 millimetres of rainfall within 24 hours, one of the highest daily rainfall volumes experienced by the country since 1995.

Reacting to the disaster, President John Mahama ordered the demolition of buildings obstructing waterways and approved the release of $29 million to support relief operations and assist affected communities.

In neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire, authorities reported 59 deaths since the onset of the rainy season in mid-May. Communications Minister Amadou Coulibaly disclosed that the casualty figure could increase as search and rescue operations continue.

The municipality of Attécoubé recorded the highest number of fatalities, with about 20 deaths. Government officials have renewed calls on residents occupying flood-prone areas to relocate immediately to safer locations.

Togo has also recorded at least five deaths from the flooding, while persistent rainfall has forced many residents in the capital city of Lomé to abandon their homes. In Benin, heavy rains paralysed activities in Cotonou, leaving major roads submerged and disrupting transportation and commerce.

Climate experts have linked the increasing frequency and intensity of flooding in the region to global warming. Benjamin Sultan, a researcher with the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development, warned that extreme weather events are likely to worsen in the coming years.

He noted that while seasonal rainfall is expected across West Africa between May and July, the unusually intense downpours are being amplified by climate change.

Experts also identified poor urban planning, blocked drainage channels, inadequate infrastructure and settlements located in flood-prone areas as major factors contributing to the scale of the disaster.

The World Meteorological Organisation estimates that Africa will require between $30 billion and $50 billion annually over the next decade to finance climate adaptation measures, including flood-control infrastructure, improved drainage systems and early warning mechanisms.

As governments across the region intensify rescue and relief efforts, humanitarian agencies have called for greater investment in disaster preparedness to reduce the impact of future flooding and safeguard vulnerable communities.
