FG Orders Security Overhaul at NIPSS Following Deadly Gunmen Attack

The Federal Government has ordered an immediate review and strengthening of security architecture at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies and other critical national institutions following the recent deadly attack on the country's foremost policy and strategic research centre.

The directive was issued by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a visit to the institute in Kuru, Plateau State, on Friday, four days after gunmen attacked the facility and killed three security personnel.

The attackers reportedly invaded the institution in the early hours of Tuesday before security operatives successfully repelled the assault and restored order.

Addressing the management, staff, and participants of the Senior Executive Course 48, 2026, Shettima said the review aligns with the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to safeguard critical national assets and institutions across the country.

The Vice President assured that security arrangements at NIPSS and similar strategic facilities would be strengthened immediately through the deployment of additional personnel, upgraded surveillance systems, reinforced perimeter fencing, and stricter access control measures.

"The incident at NIPSS is painful and unacceptable. On behalf of the Federal Government, I extend condolences to the families of the fallen officers and to the security agencies. Their sacrifice will not be in vain," Shettima stated.

He commended the swift response of security personnel who successfully repelled the attackers and praised the resilience of NIPSS staff and participants for continuing their academic and policy engagements despite the security breach.

Reaffirming the importance of the institution, Shettima described NIPSS as a vital centre for leadership development, policy formulation, and strategic research in Nigeria.

"The safety of this institution remains a top priority. Those responsible for this attack will be tracked down and brought to justice," he assured.

Also speaking during the visit, Caleb Mutfwang praised the courage and professionalism of security operatives, noting that their prompt intervention prevented what could have been a more devastating incident.

Governor Mutfwang said the Vice President's visit demonstrated the Federal Government's solidarity with the people of Plateau State and the NIPSS community during a difficult period.

"Though unfortunate, the attack could have been far worse without the prompt action of our security personnel," the governor stated.

The Federal Government's intervention comes amid growing concerns over the security of strategic institutions across the country, with authorities pledging renewed efforts to protect critical national infrastructure and personnel.
