Kwara Government Suspends Graduation, Valedictory Ceremonies Over Security Concerns
Ilorin, Kwara State – June 18, 2026
The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate suspension of all graduation, valedictory, and end-of-session ceremonies in public and private schools across the state, citing security concerns and the need to protect lives and property.
The directive, issued through the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, affects nursery, primary, and secondary schools statewide and is expected to remain in force until further notice.
According to an official communication addressed to the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to maintain safety, order, and decorum during the sensitive end-of-session period.
The Ministry noted that graduation and valedictory ceremonies typically attract large gatherings of students, parents, guardians, and invited guests, raising concerns about security vulnerabilities under the prevailing circumstances.
School proprietors, principals, headteachers, and administrators have been directed to ensure full compliance with the directive. Authorities warned that any institution found violating the order would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with existing education regulations.
The circular, signed by Mrs. Osanupin B. on behalf of the Honourable Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, called on all stakeholders within the education sector to cooperate with government efforts aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff.
While acknowledging the significance of graduation ceremonies as important milestones in students' academic journeys, the government emphasized that the protection of learners, educators, and parents remains its top priority.
Officials described the measure as temporary and assured residents that further directives would be issued as the security situation evolves.
The decision is expected to affect schools that had concluded arrangements for end-of-session celebrations for the 2025/2026 academic year. Parents and guardians have also been advised against organizing unofficial gatherings that could undermine the objective of the directive.
Education stakeholders across Kwara State are now awaiting further guidance from the Ministry regarding possible alternatives and the eventual lifting of the restriction.
