Kwara APC: Group's Alleged Move Against Danladi Sparks Debate Over Party Unity and Due Process
A fresh political debate has emerged within the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following reports that ten unsuccessful governorship aspirants have formed a coalition aimed at influencing the party's leadership ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
According to reports from a recent meeting in Abuja, the aspirants allegedly agreed to rally behind a consensus candidate who would represent their collective interests before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the national leadership of the APC. While details of the meeting remain unconfirmed, the development has generated discussions among party stakeholders regarding the implications for party unity and internal democracy.
Commenting on the reported development, Hon. Bisi Kristien expressed concern over what he described as attempts to revisit the outcome of a concluded primary election through political negotiations rather than established party procedures.
He argued that consensus arrangements are traditionally adopted before a primary election and not after a candidate has emerged through a recognized electoral process. According to him, once a primary election has been concluded and a winner declared, the outcome remains binding unless overturned through lawful procedures or the candidate voluntarily withdraws.
Kristien noted that the situation raises broader questions about respect for party structures, institutional authority, and adherence to democratic principles within political parties.
He also referenced the role of the APC governorship candidate, Rt. Hon. Engr. Yakubu Danladi, stating that Danladi had previously stepped down in support of another aspirant when party interests required such a sacrifice. He suggested that those who benefited from similar arrangements in the past should be willing to extend the same consideration in the interest of unity.
The APC chieftain further cautioned against actions that could create the impression that political influence or personal connections can be used to override duly conducted party processes.
According to him, allowing political actors to challenge established procedures whenever outcomes are unfavourable could weaken confidence in internal democracy and encourage future disputes.
Despite his concerns, Kristien acknowledged the importance of reconciliation within the party, noting that aggrieved aspirants naturally seek assurances regarding their political future and role in any incoming administration.
He expressed hope that the Abuja gathering was primarily intended to promote peace, reconciliation, and unity within the APC rather than to challenge the outcome of the party's governorship primary.
As political consultations continue ahead of the 2027 elections, observers say maintaining party cohesion while respecting established democratic procedures will remain a key challenge for the APC leadership in Kwara State.
