Only 18% of Nigerian Retailers Access Formal Loans, FMCG Report Reveals

A new industry report has revealed that only 18 per cent of retailers in Nigeria's fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector have accessed formal loans, highlighting the persistent challenge of financial exclusion among small businesses across the country.

The finding is contained in the Nigeria FMCG Industry Report 2026, published by omni.co and unveiled in Lagos on Friday by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole.

According to the report, approximately 74 per cent of retailers consider access to credit critical for sustaining daily operations. However, only a small fraction have been able to obtain formal financing, while many continue to struggle with inadequate working capital and inventory shortages.

The report noted that more than half of retailers surveyed reported credit shortfalls that directly affect their ability to restock products on time, limiting growth opportunities and operational efficiency.

Despite these challenges, Nigeria remains one of Africa's largest consumer markets, with an estimated FMCG market value of $25 billion and a population of about 238 million people.

The study further revealed that FMCG credit sales reached N325 billion in the first half of 2025, representing a 55.4 per cent year-on-year increase. Analysts say the development suggests that credit is increasingly becoming a strategic business tool rather than merely a response to financial distress.

The report also highlighted growing digital adoption within the retail ecosystem, revealing that 78 per cent of surveyed retailers now use Point-of-Sale (POS) systems.

According to the report, the widespread adoption of digital payment channels presents significant opportunities for embedded finance solutions and data-driven lending models capable of expanding access to credit for underserved businesses.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Oduwole emphasized the crucial role of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Nigeria's economy, noting that the country has more than 40 million MSMEs responsible for approximately 80 per cent of retail transactions nationwide.

She disclosed that the Bank of Industry recorded total disbursements of about N636 billion in the previous year, including N56 billion in MSME loans and N5.2 billion in grants aimed at supporting business growth and economic development.

The minister stressed the importance of data, collaboration, and visibility across the value chain, describing the FMCG sector as a key driver of manufacturing growth, employment, trade, and consumer welfare.

She also revealed that more than 500,000 MSMEs have been captured in the national MSME database, a development expected to improve formalisation and enable government agencies to design more targeted support programmes.

According to Oduwole, sustained growth in the FMCG sector depends on stronger local production, improved infrastructure, greater access to finance, efficient logistics networks, predictable regulations, increased consumer purchasing power, and expanded market access.

Industry stakeholders say addressing the financing gap facing retailers will be critical to unlocking the full potential of Nigeria's FMCG sector and supporting broader economic growth.
