Power Struggle Rocks IPOB as Directorate Suspends Nnamdi Kanu
The Directorate of State (DOS) of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the indefinite suspension of the Office of the Leader of IPOB and the position of Director of Radio Biafra, both occupied by Nnamdi Kanu.
The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Head of the Directorate of State, Chikadibia Edoziem, who said the suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice.
According to the statement, the action was taken to safeguard the activities, members, and objectives of the organisation while strengthening and reorganising the Biafra self-determination movement.
The DOS stated that the decision was reached during a meeting held on June 17, 2026, after what it described as careful consideration of the best interests of Biafrans worldwide.
The leadership maintained that IPOB was founded and sustained collectively by Biafrans in the diaspora and not by any single individual. It further argued that no person, regardless of status or position, possesses the authority to dissolve the Directorate of State, which it described as the highest governing body responsible for overseeing the affairs of the movement.
Consequently, the DOS dismissed reports of any attempt to dissolve the Directorate, declaring such actions null and void and urging members and the public to disregard them.
In explaining the reasons behind the suspension, the Directorate cited intelligence reports alleging meetings involving security agencies and Kanu, concerns over communications it claimed contributed to the arrest and deaths of some members, and fears of plans to establish a new militia that could escalate violence in the South-East region.
The group said it reviewed intelligence gathered from its internal structures and concluded that recent developments posed a significant threat to the future of the movement. It warned that failure to address the issues could weaken or ultimately dismantle IPOB's operations.
The development marks a significant twist in the leadership structure of IPOB and is expected to generate reactions within the organisation and among supporters of the Biafra self-determination campaign.
